Huge Savings on 2021 New England Rugged Maniac 5K Race

If you enjoy a challenge and don't mind getting a bit dirty, consider running a muddy obstacle course like the Rugged Maniac. My husband and I have run this particular course 4 times already. This year would have made it 5, but sadly it was canceled due to COVID restrictions.

Get a HUGE savings on the 2021 New England Rugged Maniac race if you sign up by September 4 and use the promo code NE2021. This means you'll pay only $39 plus applicable fees -- the race fee increases as race day looms and can be well over $100. Your race fee includes race entry, a race shirt, your finisher metal, a free beer afterwards to celebrate (21+ only), access to the after party and tons of free photos.

If, for some strange reason, the race is canceled again next year, you'll have the option to get a refund, defer to the following year or run the race virtually and still get all the typical swag (minus the free beer).

Free Home Energy Assessment - possibly free LED bulbs, showerheads and more!

If you live in Massachusetts and are a customer of Columbia Gas, Eversource or National Grid, you may be eligible for a free (virtual) home energy assessment! Typically these are done in person, but are temporarily conducted virtually due to the current pandemic.

My husband and I had a home energy assessment completed many years ago and, at the time, received CFL bulbs to replace all of our incandescent ones, as well as programmable thermostats to replace our non-programmable ones.

Requirements:
You need a smartphone capable of taking and sending pictures.
You'll need to take 15-20 pictures around your home and submit them before your appointment.
You need to be willing to install LED lightbulbs and power strips.
You should be comfortable filling out forms electronically.
You must be a customer of Columbia Gas, Eversource, or National Grid.
You must live in a building with 4 units or fewer.
You can only have an assessment once every three years.

If needed Mass Save will send you no-cost energy-saving LED lightbulbs, showerheads and power strips. Best of all, the cost of approved insulation and other weatherization will be 100% covered by Mass Save!

Free Admission to Over 125 National Parks

The National Park Service turned 100 years old in 2016! Celebrate the start of their second century by visiting a park in 2017. During 10 days of the year, all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone.

Mark your calendar for these upcoming entrance fee–free dates in 2017:

August 25: National Park Service Birthday
September 30: National Public Lands Day
November 11-12: Veterans Day Weekend

National parks are America’s Best Idea, and there are more than 400 parks available to everyone, every day. The fee-free days provide a great opportunity to visit a new place or an old favorite, especially one of the national parks that normally charge an entrance fee. The others are free all of the time. Plan your visit and enjoy our country’s history and nature.

The fee waiver includes entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees such as reservation, camping, tours, concession and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise.

Fee-free days make parks accessible to more people. However, national parks are always economical, with entrance fees that range from $3 to $30. In addition, any fourth grade student can get a free annual pass through the Every Kid in a Park program, and active duty military and citizens with a permanent disability can also get free passes. For more information about the variety of discounted passes available, please visit the America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass page.

MA/RI Fireworks Displays - Inexpensive Family Night Out

I've mentioned before that I grew up in the Bristol-Warren area - an area well-known for its crazily patriotic displays and the oldest Fourth of July Parade in the nation. Part of the Fourth of July festivities included oohing and aahing at the fireworks displays at Independence Park in Bristol. It  was an inexpensive, fun night out for my family. My mom would bring a cooler of sodas and juice boxes and a couple of bags of chips and cheese doodles and we'd sit out on a blanket and get eaten by mosquitoes while watching the beautiful fireworks in the sky.

No matter what part of RI or MA you're from, there's bound to be a fireworks display nearby. Check out this list for all of the local area displays and Happy Fourth of July!

Adopt, Don't Shop! Caturday Special: Bumper & Low-Cost Rabies Clinics in MA

I started volunteering at the Seekonk Animal Shelter back in December. I've always wanted to save the kitties - one kitty at a time. But since my husband put the kay-bash on my kitty-saving efforts after two kitties, I must devise a different plan for saving them!

This is a new series I plan on continuing as long as there are cats available for adoption at the Seekonk Shelter. Although called Caturday, it will also include dogs available for adoption too.

Owning a pet is an expensive endeavor. They're like children - you need to feed them, toilet them, take them to the doctor's, buy them toys.... it all adds up. So why on earth would someone want to dole out more money by buying a pet when you can get great pets through adoption!?

It is a Massachusetts state law that all dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies. This vaccine can be extremely costly if you get it from your vet. There are a series of low-cost rabies clinics that happen all over Massachusetts. Check out the list here to find one near you!

Update! As of 3/27, Bumper has been adopted!

And this week's Caturday is dedicated to Bumper.

Bumper is a young domestic short haired sweetie. He is approximately between 1 and 2 years old. He got his name Bumper because he asks to be pet by bumping your hand with his head. He absolutely loves to be pet! He can be a bit shy and may take a few minutes to warm up to a new face.

Bumper is up to date on his vaccines, is neutered and has been microchipped. This sweetie does have a grade 2 heart murmur, however, it does not require medication at this time.

If you're interested in adopting Bumper, or any other animal from the Seekonk Animal Shelter, here is the application for adoption.

Don't shop, Adopt!

Special Waterfire 12/14 in Providence, FREE ADMISSION

Here's an idea for a FREE or CHEAP date.

Make a fancy (or not fancy, your preference) dinner at home. Or bring a "picnic" and eat in downtown Providence near the water. Or visit Restaurant.com to find a great local restaurant you can visit and save.

Eat. Drink. Be Merry.

The visit Waterfire!! (see below for explanation)

From a news article published by the Associated Press:

WaterFire will hold a special holiday lighting again this year.

The nonprofit arts organization that stages elaborate bonfire lightings in Providence's downtown rivers says an anonymous donor is sponsoring the 2nd Annual Christmas WaterFire. It's scheduled for Dec. 14.

The event is being put on in partnership with the Providence Rescue Mission. Organizers are urging members of the public to bring new unwrapped toys and gifts, food, clothing and other items which will go to the men, women and children served by the nonprofit.

The fires will be lit after the lighting of the Christmas tree at the basin at Waterplace Park.
