Easy Valentine's Day Craft - Great for Parents, Grandparents, Aunts & Uncles

My 10-month old nephew, Finnley, is one of the most photogenic babies around, not that I'm biased or anything... 😂

Every holiday, Finnley's mom blesses us with these absolutely adorable Finnley-themed crafts. Valentine's Day was no exception!

Supplies Needed
1 sheet of 8.5" x 11" cardstock or thick paper
cotton balls
red paint - tempera works great
pink paint - tempera works great
heart-shaped foam or a heart-shaped cutout on paper
double-sided tape, glue dots or glue stick
lots of face-photos of your beautiful little Valentine

Steps
1. Dip 2 cotton balls in red paint and pink paint, respectively. Use cotton balls to dab the card stock, alternating colors until you're happy with the results. Let dry.

2. Adhere the heart-shaped foam or heart-shaped cutout centered on the cardstock.

3. Cut out the face of your Valentine in the photos

4. Arrange the cut-outs on to the heart in a collage pattern. Once you're happy with the arrangement, adhere the photos to the heart shape.

You could stop here if you planned to just give this beautiful gift to one person. But Finnley likes to share the love with lots of family members, so his mom took this craft to Staples, had 8 copies made and then had them laminated with a beautiful love note on the back.

Her total cost for the original plus 8 copies of the project laminated at Staples: $15.84!

Huge Savings on 2021 New England Rugged Maniac 5K Race

If you enjoy a challenge and don't mind getting a bit dirty, consider running a muddy obstacle course like the Rugged Maniac. My husband and I have run this particular course 4 times already. This year would have made it 5, but sadly it was canceled due to COVID restrictions.

Get a HUGE savings on the 2021 New England Rugged Maniac race if you sign up by September 4 and use the promo code NE2021. This means you'll pay only $39 plus applicable fees -- the race fee increases as race day looms and can be well over $100. Your race fee includes race entry, a race shirt, your finisher metal, a free beer afterwards to celebrate (21+ only), access to the after party and tons of free photos.

If, for some strange reason, the race is canceled again next year, you'll have the option to get a refund, defer to the following year or run the race virtually and still get all the typical swag (minus the free beer).

Save on Trash Disposal with TerraCycle

Like many, I live in a town that requires specialized trash bags in order to have your garbage picked up each week. The flimsy town bags often rip, which leads me to purchase regular trash bags in addition. All of this adds up!

We recycle everything we can in our weekly recycling bins, however, there are some things that just aren't allowed in those bins, like toothpaste tubes and toothbrushes. But I've discovered a way to recycle those types of products, reducing the amount of trash my family produces! This, in turn, reduces our trash bag consumption and costs.

TerraCycle works with manufacturers to offer free recycling programs for things that aren't typically recyclable. I am currently participating in a Tom's of Maine recycling program, which although sponsored by Tom's of Maine is not actually brand specific. I can send any brand toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, deodorant containers and more to be recycled.

There are so many other recycling programs available through TerraCycle, just take a look! Some I signed up for include:
  • BIC stationaryAll brands of empty writing instruments, glue sticks, watercolor dispensers, paint sets, and flexible packaging
  • Cigarette waste: Extinguished cigarettes, cigarette filters, loose tobacco pouches, outer plastic packaging, inner foil packaging, rolling paper, and ash.
  • Tom's of Maine: All brands of mouthwash bottles and caps, toothbrushes, deodorant containers and caps, soap packaging, floss containers, and toothpaste tubes and caps

Donate Your Used/Unwanted Crayons: The Crayon Initiative

I know boxes of crayons is on every back-to-school list. But what do you do with the semi-used and broken crayons from the year(s) before? Donate them to the Crayon Initiative!

Bring your unwanted crayons to any AC Moore store between June 24 and August 4, 2018. For every pound of crayons donated, AC Moore will donate $1.00 (up to $40,000) to the Crayon Initiative.

What is the Crayon Initiative you might ask? TCI melts down unwanted crayons to create brand new 8-packs of crayons. These packs are then donated to children's hospitals across the country. The new crayons are specially designed to be larger and have a flat edge to prevent rolling off of a hospital table.

Did you know:

  • One pound of unwanted crayons is recycled into 5 brand new 8-packs!
  • TCI has produced over 86,000 packs of new crayons since 2015!
  • ...which has prevented over 160,000 pounds of crayons going into landfills across the country!

Winc Wine Review & $22 Off First Month

Summer is right around the corner, which means school is almost over! I can't wait for all those summer nights sitting on the deck with my husband with a glass of wine. It seems as though I visit the liquor store with much greater frequency in the summer than throughout most of the rest of the year. But gas is so expensive at almost $4 a gallon! Why drive to get my wine when I can get it delivered to my door on a monthly basis?

Winc is not your traditional wine club: they are a direct-distribution global wine company that personalizes the entire wine experience - They are perfecting how wine is made, distributed, perceived and purchased via their Palate Profile quiz that recommends wine based on your unique tastes and I'll add enjoyed on behalf of a new generation of wine drinkers. It takes the hassle and guesswork out of picking a bottle from your local liquor store and delivers the perfect bottle directly to your doorstep. They do all this as part of their quest to improve the experience for consumers, create a platform for artisanal wine-making, and build a grape-to-glass supply chain that's sustainable for the planet. No more intimidating language and steep price points, and more joy in the act of sharing a bottle.

Through my partnership with USFamily Guides, Winc hooked me up with my first month's subscription for free. I love white wines, while my husband is more keen on reds so I was ecstatic to get a mix of both in my monthly delivery. After taking the Palate Profile quiz, I was offered 4 recommendations:  2016 Rosa Obscura Red Blend ($13); 2016 Ville Basse Merlot ($13); 2016 Finke's Widow Sparkling White Blend ($16); and 2016 Funk Zone White Blend ($17).

Shipping was incredibly fast! Someone 21+ does need to be home to receive the delivery; luckily I was able to request my delivery be held at a local Fedex pick up/drop off site.

My readers can now get $22 off their first month of Winc Wine subscription. Winc offers 4 bottle personalized wine recommendations each month. Bottles start at only $13 each. Get your wine online at Winc Wine.

Disclaimer: I received a free month subscription to Winc Wine. All opinions are my own.

Natural Skincare Products - From Toddlers to Teens to Moms!

Even though I'm in my early 30s, my skin hasn't figured out that I'm well past my teen years. I still suffer from frequent break outs. So when I was offered my pick of Healtop products to test, I jumped at the chance to try out their Teenagers package.

The Teenagers package includes three products aimed to naturally heal skin issues. I received Clear Skin - a 100% herbal spray used to calm and rejuvenate red skin; Skin Repair - a special serum used to heal irritated red skin and Sweet Feet -- a 100% natural serum used to alleviate athlete's foot.

I can't say with certainty if these products actually healed any skin issues I had, but they all smell absolutely amazing and did make my skin feel softer to the touch. One of my favorite parts is that they are all 100% or nearly 100% natural. Additionally, all of Healtop's products are cruelty and vegan.

Because these products are shipped from Israel, they may take awhile to arrive at your house. But they do come in the cutest packaging that makes you feel like you're being pampered. Don't have teen skin issues like I do? There are other packages available, including Moms, Moms over 45 and Toddlers! It's definitely worth a few minutes of your time to go peruse all of Healtop's great natural products.

It's **TIME** for a Giveaway: Timeless JORD Wood Watches

My husband has never been great at time management - he has a habit of being late to everything. And with the holiday season fast approaching, time seems to be a precious commodity, so it's even more important that he keep track of his time. But now my husband can work to improve his time management skills in style with his new Wood Watch by JORD.

When I was invited to partner with JORD to share their gorgeous wood watches with my readers, I immediately knew my husband would be ecstatic to be gifted one to review. He's mentioned quite a few times how much he wanted a watch, but particularly a handcrafted wood watch. My husband dabbles in woodworking so he knows the time and attention to detail required of such a stunning piece.

JORD hand crafts both men and women's watches from a variety of stunning and exotic woods, like Purpleheart, Koa and Zebrawood.  The folks at JORD value sustainability, efficiency, and experiential living and focus on creating timepieces that are modeled after a modern lifestyle. These watches are a truly breathtaking work of art.

My husband chose the Fieldcrest watch in dark sandalwood, which arrived in a gorgeous wooden box. The wooden watch band is a deep, rich chocolate color and the face is a large, yet simple statement piece. The craftsmanship is simply stunning and it's such a unique piece to add to my husband's slowly growing watch collection.

JORD wood watches are splash proof and come with a one year warranty. JORD offers free shipping worldwide and you can personalize your watch and/or the box it arrives in. The holidays are fast approaching - this would make the perfect gift and here's how you can save on it!

JORD Watch Giveaway
I’ve partnered with JORD to bring my readers an amazing giveaway! One lucky winner will receive a $100 JORD gift certificate towards the JORD watch of your choice.

Not feeling lucky? All of my readers can get 25% off your purchase. Just use my exclusive code cynthiashannon at checkout.

SmitCo offers a wide variety of great products geared towards the little princess in your life. You can save 20% off your purchase of SmitCo products by using promo code N3CQD6AE. Some of my favorites include:

  • Light-Up Unicorn Journal - I was just stunned to see that this journal really does light up in the most magical way! What a great gift for a little girl. Check out my review of this fabulous "Be Magical" journal!

Why not try a Brick Loot subscription? If your child enjoys Legos and building things, then this would make the perfect gift. You can get a 1 month, 3 month or 6 month subscription - save 10% off with the coupon code usfamily.

Need a great story to read with your child? My dear friend, Neal Bogosian, authored this wonderful novel, The Adventures of Chip Doolin, available in paperback as well as a Kindle edition.

How about this adorable Little Golden Book: The Little Grumpy Cat that Wouldn't?

Itty Bittys make great, inexpensive stocking stuffers. There's an Itty Bitty for everyone - from Peanuts to Star Wars to the Walking Dead and just about every pop culture icon in between. Check out the cool Spiderman Itty Bitty I have!

Grossed out by the thought of putting your munchkin on the floor? All those germs give me the heeby jeebies. Squishy Mats are a great way to keep your baby off the germy floor while allowing him or her the opportunity to play. My pup, Riley, and I reviewed this product - check out what we had to say. Use the promo code USFAMILY at checkout to save 15%.

Need something a bit more portable than the Squishy Mat? Check out the Monkey Mat - great especially for the outdoors. And it's seriously barely bigger than a CD case so it'd barely make a dent in your diaper bag.

Leap Frog makes so many great learning toys for the young ones. A favorite I give for baby showers is the Leap Frog My Pal - Violet or Pal.

Whenever I see an Eric Carle book, I get all teary-eyed and nostalgic. The illustrations are just amazing. This hardcover set is great for little fingers.

This 2018 Lil Bub calendar is an absolute must for any animal lover. Why buy this?

1. Lil Bub is an amazing rescue story
2. Lil Bub is just so darn cute
3. Lil Bub is an advocate for homeless and special needs animals - she has helped raise over $200,000 for the ASPCA

I have this "Sorry I Can't. I Have Plans With My Cat." t-shirt and wear it on a regular basis.

How about this great t-shirt, perfect for the whole family! "Adopted is my Favorite Breed" superimposed over a cute dog silhouette - available in men's, women's and youth sizes! And right now, order through Amazon and get free returns in case it doesn't fit!

My husband and I currently have this Woof frame on our floating shelf; it holds the most ridiculous photo of our pup, Riley.

These cute kitty socks make great stocking stuffers!

There are so many adorable kitty earrings. Get a pair or two or ten (!) of kitty earrings for the Crazy Cat Lady (like me!) in your life. Here are a few of my favorites:

There are a variety of animal coloring books, but this Creative Cats one is my favorite. I keep it on my nightstand to help me Zen out when I'm stressed.

Thrifty Thursday: Make Credit Cards a Positive, Not a Negative

Credit cards can be great - if you know how to use them to your own advantage. My husband and I have been able to take great advantage of credit card offers and rewards programs to buy a lot of big ticket items that we may not have spent the money on otherwise.

From our snow blower, to our Pergo flooring in our brand new dining, from our 60" TV (purchased by my husband on our wedding day!), to our mattress - we got them all using credit cards and we never paid a single cent in interest, fees, or otherwise! In fact, in most cases we SAVED money than if we paid for it using cash!

Check out how to make credit cards work for you and your family!

High End Photobook by Adoramapix - Worth Every Penny - Review

I've mentioned on several occasions that my husband, Jon, and I were heavily involved in a major renovation to our home for all of 2015 and much of 2016. Jon's dream since childhood has been to have a garage. When we bought our current home back in 2009, he confessed that he "settled" for it on the contingency that we'd eventually build a garage. The detached garage turned into an attached two-stall garage with a dining room, pantry and storage space above it. So, yeah - it was a lot of work. And I tried to document as much of the process as I had the energy to, from the start of the foundation to the very last finishing work we did.

And what better way to showcase the process than in a photobook from Adoramapix?

While Adoramapix offers many other personalized gifts, like wall decor, calendars and cards, I was really enamored by the plethora of options for their photobooks.

When designing your book, Adoramapix allows you to customize just about everything. You can choose from a variety of book sizes and shapes. You also can choose the number of pages you'd like to include. I chose an 8x8 10-page hardcovered book; it seemed like the perfect size to fit my needs.

A major positive: Adoramapix's software runs out of your web browser so there's no need to install any program on your computer. When designing your photobook, Adoramapix offers pre-made layouts based on the number of photos you'd like on a page. Or you can completely customize the size and location of your photos. If you're not particularly creative or you hate figuring out how to layout your photos, there is a "Quick and Simple" option that will "create" the book for you using the photos you've uploaded.

It was easy to navigate the software to customize the page layouts, the color of the background, the size and location of the photos and even the color, style and material used on the cover. You can choose from a linen cover, leather lux or genuine leather cover, all in a variety of colors. Pay a bit extra and you can have a title, name, etc. stamped on the front cover. Totally worth it - it makes the photobook look so professional.

Look how thick those pages are!
I ordered my 8x8 10-page photobook with a navy colored leather lux cover. I had a title stamped on the cover in silver, but I was bummed out that you were very limited with the number of characters you could use - this is the reason why it says "Garage Reno" and no renovation. Despite this small downside, the photos came out beautifully and the pages are thick and glossy. This is definitely a photobook that is going to be durable enough to leave out on our coffee table year round.

I absolutely cannot wait for my husband to unwrap this beautiful book from Adoramapix!

Your memories deserve more than a lifeless screen! Breathe life into your photos and turn them into beautiful keepsake photo books that will last for generations. Adoramapix's custom books are high quality and display your images in rich detail. Choose from gorgeous linen, hardcover and leather covers as well as 6 stunning paper finishes. Stop swiping and start printing your family memories with AdoramaPix photo books!

Menu Plan Monday 8/14 - 8/20

Last week was quite an eventful week, but not good-eventful. Like, give-me-an-ongoing-headache eventful. I tagged along on my husband's trip to NYC and on the drive up, we were rear ended getting off one highway and onto another. Both of us are fine, but my car -- not so much. So now we have the headache of insurance claims, appraisals, etc.

One of the few bright sides to the week is we ended it by celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary. It's kind of surreal - I feel like I walked down the aisle just yesterday!

So this week our goal was 100% easy, brainless meals.

Sunday - Kielbasa potato bake

Monday - Grilled chicken thighs, zucchini and rice

Tuesday -  Crockpot veal chili over polenta

Wednesday - IHOP - my younger brother turned 22 on Monday and he REALLY wanted to go to IHOP

Thursday - Turkey ham with glaze, coucous and brussels sprouts

Friday - Pasta bake with chicken

Saturday - BLTs using tomatoes from our garden, edamame, tater tots and zucchini

Free Set of Wedding Bands from JVL

Five years ago, my husband and I sat through a horrendous cooking demonstration where an attempt was made to con us into buying exceedingly overpriced cookware in order to receive a bag full of goodies as our consolation prize. Despite losing two hours of lives, we made out on the deal: we walked away with a coupon for a free set of wedding rings and we managed to walk away without buying any of that crappy cookware.

If you're looking for a simple and tasteful wedding band that will last forever, JVL Jewelry is the place to hit up. You have a choice of titanium or tungsten. My husband's band is from JVL (I bought one too but then found one I liked better at Kohl's for a fairly decent price) and has held up wonderfully over the last four years. He does a lot of work outside and likes to build things, so we were worried a typical gold ring would scratch and dent with normal wear and tear. His tungsten ring looks pretty much the same as it did the day I put it on his finger!

JVL is offering a FREE set of wedding bands if you purchase by 9/30/15 and use the promo code JUST4U. This does not include shipping or any personalizing. I also highly recommend you get your finger sized at a jewelry store before ordering as you cannot resize these ring. There is a nifty exchange policy if you realize immediately that your ring won't fit (and you didn't engrave it).

One of my favorite parts about JVL is their lifetime warranty  - if you lose it or damage it, just pay $35 and get a brand new one!

What's Cookin' Wednesday: Birthday Shots

Oh. My. God.

My baby brother turned 21 last week?! He's all grown up.

Can you say "awww!" Look at how little he was!
His awkward long-hair, grungy, I'm angry at the world phase.

Not a baby anymore!

To celebrate, I had the family over for a small cookout. But since he turned the big, ol' 2-1, we celebrated with something extra special: pudding shots!

You may have heard of jello-shots before. But I'm not a huge fan of jello to begin with, so adding alcohol doesn't make me like it anymore. But pudding shots? You've got to be careful with those suckers because they taste like an indulgent mousse dessert.

There are so many different combinations of pudding and alcohol that can be used to make pudding shots. I'll leave you with the general recipe and then what I used to make my delicious Rum Chata pudding shots.

General Ingredients:

Small package of instant pudding
8 oz package of Cool whip or whipped topping
1 C milk
1 C alcohol

My Ingredients:

Small package of chocolate pudding
8 oz package of whipped topping
1 C 1% milk
1 C Rum Chata rum cream

Mix the milk, alcohol and pudding together until thoroughly mixed. Fold in whipped topping. Scoop or pour into dixie cups or plastic shot cups. If you want to be fancy, you can scoop the mixture into a piping bag and pipe it into the shot cups so you don't make a mess like me. But I don't mind mess - it makes it look "rustic."

Chill in the fridge for several hours before serving. These are meant to be eaten with a spoon, not swallowed like a shot. Although it was funny to watch my mom try. :-)
