What's Cookin' Wednesday: Homemade Bourbon Cranberry Sauce

I haven't posted a What's Cookin' Wednesday post in awhile, but since I made so many dishes from scratch for Thanksgiving and my family raved about them, I figured I'd share some of the recipes with you.

This recipe for bourbon cranberry sauce is taken from FoodNetwork.

Ingredients
1 bag of fresh cranberries (12 oz)
1 1/4 cups of granulated sugar
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (or more if you like it super cinnamon-y)
pinch of nutmeg
1/4 cup bourbon

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a casserole dish (I of course use my Pyrex), mix the cranberries, sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Cover with foil and bake for approximately 55 minutes. Stir and put back into the oven for another 5 minutes. Remove from oven and mix in the bourbon. Let cool completely before refrigerating. This should last about a week in the fridge but you won't need to worry about that because I promise you that your family will gobble it right up!

Small Business Saturday: Shop Small, Stay Local!

Today is Small Business Saturday.

I'm sure at this point you've read the articles or seen the YouTube videos that have gone viral emphasizing the ridiculousness of Black Friday (and in some states Black Thursday). It makes me sick to my stomach that we live in such a world of consumerism - is there any tangible item ever worth trampling someone for?

In any regard, today marks Small Business Saturday - a day we can forget about all of the craziness that went on yesterday at the "big box" stores and focus on boosting the economy by shopping locally at smaller, family-run businesses.

My friend and colleague, Jennifer Gillooly Cahoon, is a local artist out of Rhode Island. She is a visual artist who, right now, is primarily creating paintings, although she continues to dabble in assemblage. She is currently working on a collection called the Day of the Dead (DOTD) series, which she started a little more than a year ago. She sells originals, prints on photo paper, prints on canvas, mugs, necklace pendants and more. Please check out her Etsy store and consider picking up a piece or two for holiday gifts. I purchased two prints, one for myself and one as a gift for my husband for Christmas.

Swansea Mall is Collecting Toys for Tots

Swansea Mall (Swansea Mall Drive in Swansea, MA) is collecting toys for Toys for Tots. Please consider donating to this very worthy cause. When I was younger, after my dad got sick and we had no income at all for quite some time, my mom got to pick out one toy for each of her four children. Those who donated toys to Toys for Tots helped put smiles on our faces when times were tough for us.

Free Holly Jolly Treasure Hunts at Swansea Mall

Kids can spread some holiday cheer during Swansea Mall's Holly Jolly Treasure Hunts on Saturdays December 7th and December 14th at 10am. Kids will follow clues to participating mall stores to pick up lots of fun holiday treats.

The hunts are open to the first 100 kids who pre-register by completing a form on the Mall's website, calling the mall Office at 508-679-2543 or by signing up at the Mall Office Mon. through Fri. from 8:30 am to 5 pm. Space fill ups quickly, so register now!

In the past, I have participated in Toys for Tots as well as the Giving Tree at our local mall. Since Coupon Mama Massachusetts started, I have read countless posts by other frugal living bloggers about Operation Christmas Child.

Remember The Reason for The Season

I used to be a Sunday School teacher at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Warren, RI. I started teaching when I was 15 years old and continued there and then later at my own home for 6 years.

One major part of our curriculum was making sure the students understood that Christmas would not exist without Christ. That He truly is the reason for the season.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Even the existence of Santa Claus has religious backing. Without Saint Nicholas, the notion of a jolly man delivering gifts to our children would probably not be a popular tradition.
