I've been talking to my students about the importance of giving back when you can and not just giving back with the expectation of getting something in return. My students are required to complete 6 hours of community service per year (24 hours in total) in order to graduate. In one of my classes we've been doing small-scale community service activities but I refuse to sign off on any hours!! Yes, Ms. Lachapelle is oh-so-mean! Not really, I just want my students to do NICE THINGS for others out of the goodness of their hearts, not because they'll reach a graduation requirement doing it!
So far we've decorated plastic butter and sour cream containers and then planted mums. We gave those to special needs program in our school that has no budget to buy supplies - they sell snacks and other goodies to teachers so they can sell the potted mums to us too! We've also started making Veterans Day cards as well as Thanksgiving cards for nursing home residents.
Also important, in my opinion, is I talked to them about Superpoints, and how I'm donating all of my cash-monies earned between 11/2 & 11/16 to a ministry group that puts together food baskets for Thanksgiving (and Christmas!). I've made $3.01 so far and I'm hoping to make a ton more. If you sign up using my invitation code, I earn a point when you earn a point. And you get to keep your own points to do whatever you want with them! So if you (or my students who are reading this!) are interested in joining, here are some invitations.
