At-Home Teeth Whitening: Does it Work? Review & Giveaway

Giveaway Extended until Fri. July 20!

As I've mentioned in past posts, so many great things are happening in the Coupon Mama Massachusetts family! Not only is my baby brother expecting a son with his girlfriend in August, but my youngest sister, Nicole, is recently engaged and planning a wedding for October 2019. While the details are still in the works, I know I’ll inevitably end up in multitudes of family photos, so it’s important that I am photo-ready for the big day. That especially includes my smile. And next to my sister’s virgin pearly whites, this coffee-addict’s teeth just aren’t photo-worthy.

Through my partnership with US Family Guide, Smile Brilliant sent me a complimentary T6 kit for average stains to try out and review. I’ve experienced other teeth-whitening products in the past. I’ve tried whitening toothpastes, whitening strips, teeth whitening gels I purchased through Groupon (just don’t do it), even brushing with peroxide and baking soda (super messy). My mother-in-law is a hygienist and is always toting the in-office teeth whitening procedure at her dental office, but I just can’t swing the $300+ for it.

Smile Brilliant will send you a kit that includes the materials needed to create impressions of your teeth. By mixing a base paste with a catalyst paste, you’ll create a play-dough like concoction that you’ll bite into to create that impression. It is imperative that you read all of the directions before starting to create your impressions and follow them exactly. Smile Brilliant is smart and includes a “backup” set of pastes just in case your first attempt at dental impressions goes awry. These impressions will be sent to the Smile Brilliant lab using an included postage-paid envelope and the lab will turn these impressions into your custom-made teeth whitening trays.

Once you receive your teeth whitening trays, which come in a little protective case, you are ready to start whitening. The T6 kit I received included 6 syringes of whitening gel and 6 syringes of desensitizing gel - good for up to 18 applications for your top and bottom teeth.

Again, just like with making the impressions, it’s so important to read and follow all of the included directions. To whiten, first you brush your teeth without toothpaste and floss. Whitening takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours. The length of time you whiten will depend on your sensitivity and pain tolerance. I was only able to get up to 1 hour after 4-5 whitening sessions.

Once you’re done whitening, you brush with toothpaste, then follow with the desensitizing gel treatment. This will help alleviate some of the sensitivity issues you may have experienced while whitening. Several of my teeth, particularly the ones which have been filled, are especially sensitive, so I usually used the desensitizing treatment for the maximum recommended 20 minutes.

The most tedious part of the whole process is how time consuming it is. You’re not supposed to eat or drink after the treatments, so I tried to do it immediately before bed. Except I’m a 90-year-old lady in a 32-year-old body and tend to go to bed before it even gets dark out, so I had to force myself to stay up long enough to finish the lengthy process. Immediately after whitening and desensitizing, my teeth looked spotty, but come morning, the color of my teeth was evened out.

I only whitened about 5 times, so I wasn’t expecting a huge difference between my “Before” and “After” photos, but my sister actually commented, unprovoked, on my teeth yesterday! She asked me what I had been doing to make my teeth whiter! And I was excited to tell her all about Smile Brilliant.
