Owning a pet is an expensive endeavor. They're like children - you need to feed them, toilet them, take them to the doctor's, buy them toys.... it all adds up. So why on earth would someone want to dole out more money by buying a pet when you can get great pets through adoption!?

If you adopt a cat or dog from a Massachusetts shelter, it is a requirement that the animal be spayed or neutered. If the animal is old enough, it will be spayed before adoption and the adoption fee may be a bit higher. If the animal is too young, you, as the adopter, are required to sign paperwork stating you will have the animal spayed by a certain deadline. If you do not follow through and provide documentation, the shelter can pursue legal action.

In the state of Rhode Island, it is a law that any cat over the age of 6 months must be spayed or neutered. The only exception is if you have a license for breeding or if you have a letter from the veterinarian stating the cat cannot be spayed due to age or other medical reasons.

Buy spaying and neutering can be EXPENSIVE!

This list has been put together by the Massachusetts Animal Coalition.  And here is a list of low-cost clinics in Rhode Island which has been compiled by Dog Lover's Digest. Often times you can opt to have your pet receive vaccinations, such as rabies and distemper in cats or rabies and parvo in dogs, during the spay appointment for an additional, yet subsidized cost.

Providence Restaurant Week(s) - Great Food for a Low Price

It's back!! Providence Restaurant Weeks has returned.

Starting July 10 and running through July 23, many local area restaurants (not all in Providence) are participating in some great prix fixe menu options or Buy 1 Get 1 free deals as part of Providence Restaurant Week.

Mixbook Review & Valentine's Day Promo Code!

I was so excited when the opportunity to partner with the folks at Mixbook came up right before the New Year. It gave me the chance to make the perfect family photo album for my dear hubby for Valentine's Day!

Mixbook offers a wide variety of photo gifts that can be personalized - from photo books to calendars to event and holiday cards. Their online platform allows for unlimited photo storage, a super nifty auto-fill feature for multi-photo layouts and a very user-friendly editing and template tool.

I chose to turn a year's worth of my fur babies' photos into a 2015 Shannon Family album for Jon as a Valentine's Day gift.

Photo book size options range from 12"x"12 to 8.5"x8.5". You can select from softcover or hardcover, depending on your desire. I chose the 8.5"x8.5" sized hardcover book because it would fit perfectly on our growing bookcase of photo albums.

I had a difficult time selecting a template as there were so many to choose from. After much hemming and hawing, I finally chose Chalkboard Sayings because I loved the dark color scheme contrasting with the white lettering and borders.

Each Mixbook template comes with pre-determined page layouts, but you can customized as you see fit. I loved that a lot of the design was done for me - sometimes my creative juices are dried up. There were a few page layouts that required high-resolution photos that I didn't have available, so I was able to quickly and easily modify the layout on my own to accommodate the photos I did have and wanted to include in my photo book.

My photo book included 76 different images and it took me about an hour to make from my laptop. The program itself was easily to use. And once I created an account, my project saved from time to time so I didn't lose what I was working on if I accidentally logged out of my computer.

I ordered my photo book on 1/22 and it arrived carefully packed in cardboard on 1/29. Such a quick processing time! I was floored when I unwrapped my book. The quality is amazing. The pages themselves are thick and the entire book is professional quality. I couldn't be happier.

And of course, I'm terrible at keeping secrets. So I ended up giving Jon his Valentine's Day gift two weeks early. Oops! But he LOVED it!

Mystery, Vixens, 1930s Zombies, Oh My! Book Review: "Dead Men Kill"

As a die-hard zombie fan, I'm always looking for another film or novel to whet my zombie-loving appetite. Best selling American pulp fiction author L. Rob Hubbard introduces a unique perspective on the walking dead, setting his story, Dead Men Kill, in the Golden Age of the 1930s. Originally published in a 1934 issue of the pulp fiction magazine, Thrilling Detective, Dead Men Kill follows Terry Lane, a police detective, through the most spine-tingling and dangerous investigation of his life. In an effort to capture a serial murderer, Lane battles the living dead, encounters a sexy vixen, and tries to evade the mysterious and deadly threats from "loup-garou."

If you're looking for an action-packed, quick and easy read, Dead Men Kill is sure to be right up your alley. At less than 100 pages, L. Ron Hubbard's story took me less than two hours to read. While not the most elegant use of language or most flowery prose, the short chapters are engaging and leave you wanting more.

The audio-drama version is equally as fast paced and suspenseful. Featuring Emmy Award-winning actor John Mariano, the audio performance includes music and sound effects that make you feel as though you're running beside Terry Lane through the cemetery and fighting off your own pack of brainless zombies. In some cases, the audio-drama acting is almost too quick paced, making it difficult to follow the story line if you're not reading along with the actors' performances.

The book itself is printed on wonderfully thick paper meant to mimic the look and feel of the pulp fiction magazines in which the story was originally published and bring that Golden Age nostalgia in its readers. If you're looking for an out-of-the-box zombie tale or you just want a quick and entertaining read, Dead Men Kill  is worth the time.
