Rant: Hiding Behind Anonymity

The dawn of all of this social networking and social media has brought forth a startling, yet all too common, form of cowardice among our present generations. Create an account on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter or even a basic email address and you're initially asked what alias you'd like to use as your screen name. In some cases, the script form requests a first and last name, however, how easy is it to make one up? You too can be Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne or even Marilyn Monroe. Steal a photo off Google images and add it as your default and presto! you're someone else.

Now, I guess there isn't anything wrong with liking anonymity. I used to write my own public diary-like blog where I was risking a great deal by not using a pseudonym. Privacy can be a good thing; not everyone wants their dirty laundry aired out in front of the world. However, what really drives me crazy is when those who hide behind anonymity or ridiculous aliases decide to ridicule, criticize or carry on arguments heated discussions via social media or other websites where comments are allowed. (For instance, online newspaper articles). Remember back in the day when you had to include your name AND address in order to submit a letter to the editor? Man, I'm only 26 and miss those days dearly.

If you dislike something you read or see in a post and feel strongly enough to comment on it, grow some cahones and leave your name. It is childish and juvenile to throw negative comments or judgments then run away and hide behind your made-up screen name.

And don't even get me started on Anonymous comments.

Dear Anonymous,

Nine times out of ten, you are a royal moron and use your anonymity because you are fully aware your comments are off base and have no backing. So either man up and use your name or stop commenting.

Love always, Hugs and kisses,
Cynthia
