Brick Loot Review and Discount Code

Growing up, my sisters and I loved to play with blocks more than anything. Our mom kept the special LEGOs high up on a shelf so we had to be especially well behaved to be able to play with them. From what I've heard, those little blocks hurt a tad when young ones forget to pick them all up so we had to earn that privilege!

So I was extremely excited when Brick Loot, a subscription company for LEGO and Brick fanatics, offered to send me one of their boxes to check out their great loot.

October's Brick Loot box is based on the theme "Arcade." I grew up in the late 80s - early 90s so this was right up my alley! Totally nostalgic for me!

My box contained a really great tiny LEGO container called "Head Case." Get it? Head-case.... head case? Haha.

Sorry. Moving on...

I also got 2 little kits for building - one for a pixel monster, which reminds me of Pacman from back in the day, and another for building arcade machines. This one came with additional instructions to build even more machines. My favorite piece was the cute Gamer Minifigure - it reminded me of my friends growing up fighting over the Nintendo controller.

If you or someone you know is a fan of LEGOs, then a Brick Loot subscription is the way to go. Think ahead to the upcoming holidays - this would make an amazing gift!

Each month your Brick Loot box is filled with 4-8 items that were hand picked by Brick specialists who scour the world for the newest and coolest products for you to collect. Get custom LEGO kits, minifigures and accessories delivered to your door monthly! Invented by a 9 yr old, this box is fun for ages 6 - 99!

Interested in checking it out? My readers get to save 10% off Brick Loot using the code usfamily

Giveaway: KidStuff Coupon Book!

Once again, the amazing folks at KidStuff Coupon Books have given me the opportunity to share with you their great product via a giveaway! Skip to the bottom if you just want to hurry up and enter!

If you have kids or have friends or relatives with kids, I'm sure you've been accosted to purchase goodies from a catalog used as a fundraiser for their school. You know what I'm talking about... the 5 pound tin of popcorn you end up throwing out or the ridiculously priced tub of cookie dough? Some catalogs contain the $15 candle that stops smelling pretty two days after opening it. As a teacher, I get asked to partake in purchasing fundraising goodies all the time and often I have to politely turn down my students because I simply can't afford to buy all that stuff that I don't need or will never use.

So when I was approached by the folks at KidStuff Coupon Books to take a peek at their own version of school fundraising goodies, I was all over the opportunity!

KidStuff Coupon Books vary depending on your location. I counted 26 different books based on locations all over the country. And new this year are the RI and Albany area books!

I received the Eastern & Central Massachusetts Coupon Book which is teeming with coupons and savings passes for chain and local vendors. The book itself is separated into three color-coded sections: blue is for shopping and services, yellow is for activities and attractions, and red is for dining and food.

Coupons are included for chain vendors like Sears, Men's Wearhouse and Sonic. Then there are discounts for places more local to Massachusetts such as the Boston Duck Tours.

At the very front of the book, there's an alphabetic listing of all of the vendors included in the book to make browsing easier.

The book costs $25 and HALF of that goes directly to the school fundraising. I promise you you'll get more use out of the KidStuff Coupon Book than you ever did with that 5 pound tin of popcorn. AND you'll be helping a local school raise money for their educational initiatives! What a great two-for-one deal!! You get an entire book of savings (over 400 pages!!!) and your local school earns money!

If you're involved with school fundraising and are interested in more information, please contact KidStuff Coupon Books at

Monkeying Around is Easier with the Monkey Mat - Get $5 Off & Free Shipping #sponsored

I live in the rural sticks. I'm talking nearly a one to one ratio of farm animal to human. Living in the sticks means just that - lots of sticks, dirt, grass... And my husband and I are outdoorsy folks, but I'm certainly not a fan of getting my clothes covered in said sticks, dirt and grass. So I was very excited to try out the Monkey Mat - a convenient, fabulous, fairly newly product as seen on Shark Tank.

MyMonkey Mat in the color red coral crush came packaged in a small cardboard box not much bigger than a CD case. It's seriously so small that it could easily fit in my purse. It is made of a very soft, smooth nylon material, and has the Monkey Mat logo in the center, lightly weighted corners and loops at each corner in case you want to stake it down.

After unpacking my Monkey Mat and the stakes I also received, I headed outside to play with my indoor-outdoor kitty, Selina Kyle, also known as Squish.

At first I tried to use it without staking it down, but the second my 9-pound Squish stepped on it, the Monkey Mat bunched up. The weighted corners, while seemingly very sturdy, aren't heavily weighted so it didn't take much for the mat to move. In the end, I really had no choice but to stake it down.

My backyard is grassy but much of the dirt is hard-packed. I spread out the Monkey Mat and used the stakes to secure it, but the stakes are only made of plastic and I had to be very careful not to push too hard because they were starting to bend from the pressure.

It was earlier in the day and the grass was absolutely covered with dew. I'm a wuss and hate being wet, but the Monkey Mat did a great job keeping me dry. It repelled the water underneath for the entire 45 minutes Selina and I were hanging out. Being 5' by 5', it was the perfect size - I could comfortably lay out on it and still have plenty of room for someone else.

One of my favorite features is that it comes with its own attached carrying case. The carrying case even has a wrist strap that can be easily unclipped/clipped so you can easily clip it to something - my husband and I like to clip things to our backpack for easy access. Of course when I went to repack the Monkey Mat, it didn't look nearly as pretty or neatly tucked in as it did when I first received it.

Loves

  • water repellent
  • when wrapped up, it's so small! it could fit in my purse
  • attached carrying case (you can't lose it)
  • clippable wrist strap on case
  • soft fabric
  • convenient and easy to use
  • machine washable!
  • comes in lots of colors: red coral crush, gray groove, orange sunrise, blue yonder, hang tag gray & hang tag blue
Not Loving So Much
  • plastic stakes are flimsy
  • carrying case is not super secure where it attaches to the mat

Conclusion:
The Monkey Mat is a convenient, easy to use way to keep you and your stuff off whatever surface you're on. It would be great at the beach for young and old alike. It would be particularly great for parents who don't want their infants laying on a potentially dirty floor. It's definitely worth the investment if you're like me and often sit on the floor or the ground.

I'm so grateful that the folks at Monkey Mat were kind enough to send me a free mat and stakes to try out. I promise you - it's a great product! This is the PERFECT addition to your summer!

Menu Plan Monday 8/14 - 8/20

Last week was quite an eventful week, but not good-eventful. Like, give-me-an-ongoing-headache eventful. I tagged along on my husband's trip to NYC and on the drive up, we were rear ended getting off one highway and onto another. Both of us are fine, but my car -- not so much. So now we have the headache of insurance claims, appraisals, etc.

One of the few bright sides to the week is we ended it by celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary. It's kind of surreal - I feel like I walked down the aisle just yesterday!

So this week our goal was 100% easy, brainless meals.

Sunday - Kielbasa potato bake

Monday - Grilled chicken thighs, zucchini and rice

Tuesday -  Crockpot veal chili over polenta

Wednesday - IHOP - my younger brother turned 22 on Monday and he REALLY wanted to go to IHOP

Thursday - Turkey ham with glaze, coucous and brussels sprouts

Friday - Pasta bake with chicken

Saturday - BLTs using tomatoes from our garden, edamame, tater tots and zucchini

Want to start menu planning to help save time, money and stress at supper time? Use my menu plan template.

Save on Books to Celebrate National Book Lovers Day!

Does your child have summer reading to do before they head back to school in September? I know my high schoolers do. And often times, I find that they've purchased the book, read it once and then it collects dust bunnies underneath their beds. What a waste of money!

Here are some tried and true ways to have your child complete their summer reading assignment inexpensively and just in time for National Book Lovers Day!

1. Borrow from the library - this is 100% free, unless of course you owe fines and you tend to lose books... it also can be tough if a million others are waiting to borrow the same book

2. Search for the full text on Google - as a teacher, I do this all of the time... I don't have enough copies of books to send home for homework so I find an online version that is free so students can access it when not in school. Here are some full text books I know are on some high school summer reading lists.

Into the Wild
Lord of the Flies
The Hunger Games Book 1
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Speak

3. If you prefer ebook version, Overdrive is an amazing free app for the Smartphone or tablet. You link your account to your library card and "borrow" the ebook from the library. Once your rental period is over, the book vanishes from your online bookshelf.

4. If you insist on buying the book, my favorite website for purchasing good-condition, inexpensive books is Thriftbooks. Book prices start around $2.99. If your order is $10, shipping is free. If you comment with your email address, I can send you an email with a 15% off your first order coupon (for first time users only). Best yet, once you make an account, it tracks your purchases. Once you hit $50, they send you a $5 credit to use!

5. Project Gutenberg is a great database of 49,000 books that have been converted into ebooks. They are all available for free. These include mostly classics like Kafka's Metamorphosis and Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

6. Savers - many people forget about thrift stores when it comes to buying books. Savers's book prices are hard to beat. If the retail price is less than $7.94, the book is $1.99. If it's higher, it's $2.99. Children's books are priced differently but I can't recall the prices. If you buy 4 books, the 5th is free. I just walked out the other day with 5 books for my classroom for $11 including tax. It is hit or miss, though, but many of the more common, best sellers can be found on the shelves there.
