Kohls frequently has awesome deals for their charge card customers. It sotra makes me a bit mad that these great deals are ONLY for customers who choose to use their Kohls charge card, but I'm not about to complain because I'm afraid they'll take away the deals entirely rather than open them to all customers.
Recently, Kohls was offering 15%, 20% or 30% off your entire purchase when you used your Kohls charge card; this deal ended yesterday. To coincide with this great deal, you could also earn Kohls cash for every $50 you spent after all discounts. The Kohls cash ended October 24th.
My mom and I hit up Kohls in Seekonk, MA yesterday and grabbed a bunch of stuff. I was supposed to be going Christmas shopping.... While I did get one thing for my hubby, I ended up with a ton of stuff for myself. But I didn't pay a ton of money!
And because the store still had signage up that said "Earn Kohls Cash NOW!" my mom complained at their customer service desk and they actually honored it and gave us $10 in Kohls Cash since we spent $56!
The secret to the Kohls charge card.... If you have good enough credit, get the charge card. Buy stuff with it using your discount. Then stand in the same line, hand them the cash you would have otherwise paid along with your card, and they'll take your payment for the bill right then and there. That way, your monthly statement will show up as $0, and you'll still be able to snag the discount!
Here's what I got - this doesn't include my mom's stuff. She took her stuff home with her.
$2.80 - 30% = $1.96

Clearanced for $9 - 30% = $6.30
Originally $48, Clearanced for $9.60 - 30% = $6.72

I ran by my local Walgreens today to pick up my free 8x10 photoprint (no longer available) and figured I'd take a minute or two to stroll the aisles. I love their bright orange signs that indicate CLEARANCE! I found a few noteworthy deals.
I already put everything away and since we're leaving in a few minutes for vacation, I didn't have time to take a photo.
Clabber Girl 4 oz. Baking Powder - $.24/ea (reg. $.99)
Karo light corn syrup - $.94/ea (reg. $3.99)
Walgreens brand Mucus Cough Syrup 10 oz $1.29 (reg. $4.99)
If you're near a Walgreens, it's totally worth it to check their aisles. All of the items I bought have at least a 2013 expiration date!
It seems that each year during the Massachusetts sales tax-free holiday, I always end up not in Massachusetts or so busy I can't go shopping to take advantage of the tax-free day. In 2011, the tax-free holiday landed on August 13-14th. August 13, 2011 was my wedding and we left at 5am on the 14th for our Aruban honeymoon.
My husband did not let our impending wedding stop him from taking advantage of the tax-free holiday. While I was getting my hair did and my husband's cousin was busy beautifying me (a difficult task, I must add), my husband and his testosterone laden posse were out buying this nifty gadget:
Yes, my friends. Mere hours before our wedding, my husband was taking a ride to the local Best Buy store, coupons in hand (I taught him well) and ready to jump on the tax-free bandwagon. He saved hundreds of dollars between his coupons, gift cards he had (some of which we earned through credit card points) and the tax-free promotion.
So if your state is offering a tax-free holiday this year and you're around to go shopping, take advantage of it! I do not recommend taking advantage if it is the morning of your wedding, however. :-)
As of right now, Massachusetts tax-free holiday is still up in the air. It is tentatively set for August 11th and 12th.
I told you last week that Michael's had all of their summer wooden thingies 70% off. Well, it appears that they're all 80% off now! I got more birdhouses (my husband is gonna kill me!) and for even less than I paid last week! I already started painting the last set, so I can't wait 'til they're all done and ready to be hung up on a stake and put in our backyard!
3 birdhouses $1.39/ea (down from $6.99)
mini birdhouse $.20 (down from $99)
birdhouse windchime $.39 (down from $1.99)
3 craft paints $.59 regular price
1 Martha Stewart glitter paint $.79 (down from $3.99 I think)
2 packages recipe cards $.25/ea (not sure their regular price)
recipe box $4.99 (I used a 40% off any regular priced item so it become $2.99)
This completes a gift for someone that I won't elaborate on, as well as the gift for Nora, the munchkin I babysit for.
So my husband and I have debated the entire first half of the summer about having our younger cat, Zoe, groomed. She is a long haired calico and she was taken from her mother much too soon as a stray, so she's not the most hygienic/clean cat on the block. And with the summer heat in full swing, she was shedding ridiculously. I was having to vacuum daily just to keep from mini kittens (i.e. balls of fur) from taking up residence in every corner and crevice of my house.
Once upon a time
Before, Our little furry monster
We finally decided that we'd have her shaved professionally, as we'd tried to do it ourselves once with very little success and a lot of frustration. This was a major splurge, but we try not to spare any expenses when it comes to our "children." Needless to say she looks very amusing with her lion's cut. At least she'll be mat-free and cooler in the summer heat with her new haircut. You can't hide her tubbiness anymore, though, beneath all her fur. :-)
So I caved and visited Target and its glorious 70% off toy clearance. I don't have a lot of kids to shop for, but I do have a 3 1/2 year old niece and a nearly 2 year old nephew who is on my holiday shopping list.
Most of the good stuff had been picked over already, but I got a few good things. There were tons of girly toys but most had really tiny parts so I didn't want to go there with a toddler in the house. I don't want to be responsible for a choking episode. Good thinking, right Erica?
Crayola Cars 2 Stick N' Play Poster - $4.01 down from $13.99
Hi Ho! Cherry-O Preschool Game - $3.26 down from $10.89
Cars 2 Geo Trax Cars (they talk, how cool!) - $3.74 down from $12.49 (I got 2 packages of these)
In addition to the toy clearance, I also got some other goodies
Spritz 20 sq ft gift wrap - $.83 down from $.3.99 (I got 3 of these)
Spice packets - $.38 down from $.79 (I got 3 of these)
Mossimo tank top - $5 on sale this week; I used a $3 off any Mossimo woman's apparel coupon
There are several great apparel coupons that could make on-sale or clearance items super duper cheap!
Did you get any great Target clearance stuff this week?
I swear the stores have had back-to-school supplies in every aisle since before the school year was even over! As a teacher, I cringe whenever I see the back-to-school supplies hit the stores because it gets my mind's gears cranking about the upcoming school year. Kids get first-day-of-school anxiety and so do teachers. Or at least I do.
Like most parents, as a teacher I am always pursuing the great back-to-school sales and bargains to stock up my classroom. I can't tell you how many students show up to class, from the first day of school and on, without ANY supplies at all. No pencil. No notebooks. No binders. N-O-T-H-I-N-G. So these great steals and deals really help me help my students who don't have school supplies for whatever reason.
This year I will be focusing on purchasing back-to-school supplies to help support local Massachusetts students whose families are unable to acquire school supplies. I encourage you to also look into helping others in this small way. No child should be unable to work to his or her fullest potential simply due to lack of supplies.
Here are several organizations in Massachusetts that are collecting school supplies to help local students. Feel free to puruse these organizations or find one in your own area to donate to.
If you decide to donate, I'd love to hear your stories and even see photos. I will keep you updated in my endeavors.
My goal:purchase and donate $100 worth of supplies (at a much more frugal rate of course!) to one or more of the following organizations.

There's a Swizz Beatz song called She ain't got no money in the bank and that's all that keeps playing in my head everytime I see those flashy CLEARANCE signs in stores.
I've been hanging up in Avon, CT with the hubs and checking out all the stores nearby. Michael's Arts & Crafts always has great after-holiday sales and I was expecting to stock up on Fourth of July decorations for super cheap. Little did I know I'd walk out spending almost $30 but getting a TON of great (and super cute) stuff!
Most of the clearance at Michael's was 70% off, however, it wasn't marked down that way on the tags or on the shelves. I nonchalantly scanned an item I really liked and my jaw dropped when the price was marked down to 70%! That was it; I was off and running!
I got all this stuff for $29.29 including CT state tax. And to top it off, I got tons of stuff for a Christmas gift for the little girl I babysit; we love doing arts and crafts together and I know she'll get a kick out of painting her decorations.
Here's the Run Down:
Photo albums (holds 400 photos) - $4.99 down from $24.99 x 2
Bird houses - $2.09 down from $6.99 x 4 (the one with the flower windmill is for my munchkin Nora)

Garden stakes - $.29 down from $.99 x 2
Ceramic birds - $1.19 down from $3.99 x 2
Garden spinners - $.59 down from $1.99 x 2
Bird house wall decoration - $.59 down from $1.99
Metal and wood decoration - $.89 down from $2.99 x 2
Isn't this spinner adorable? And only $.59!!
I'm IN LOVE with my bird houses. Now I just have to convince the hubby to build me a stand so I can nail down all three on one post.

Here are some deals and steals that can be found at Walmart. Be aware that prices vary based on location, so don't run out to Walmart JUST for these deals and steals.
Also be aware that Massachusetts charges sales taxes AFTER COUPON DEDUCTIONS!
Walmart also allows overages, so if your coupon is valued at more than the item, you'll get cash back or you can use the overage to pay for other items in your cart.
I'm not so sure I'm ready for Black Friday 2011. Funds are tight, the economy stinks, yet I still don't think this will lure me into the stores at midnight or two am or even five am...
I mean, c'mon now. Look at this cute little old lady being pushed around in this crowd! I'm all set!
But for those of you who are planning to brave the crowds to get the best deals and steals on Black Friday 2011, here is a link that offers you most of the available ad scans and line ups for stores across the nation. So far, nothing has really jumped out at me as being a MUST HAVE AT A MUST HAVE PRICE.
